Chan and Tan: Escape Plan

For Christmas, Tanner surprised me with a weekend away at the Marriott in Newport and I surprised HIM with season tickets to the Segerstrom! Our first show, Blue Man Group, happened to fall on the weekend Tanner had booked for us.
We left the kids with the Tolley’s on Friday afternoon. They ran into their house and didn’t even look back to say goodbye. (And when they got home from church on Sunday, we were already home and they were bummed that they couldn’t continue hanging out with the Tolley’s, playing at their house.. sheesh!) We drove into Newport and grabbed dinner at Mama Ds. The service was the most exceptional we have ever experienced and the food was scrumptious! Seriously, SO GOOD!
We checked into the hotel and realized we had a 2 room condo. It was huge and WAY more than what we needed- for a second we considered invited someone to join us but then decided we should just live it up and take over the space! We got all comfy and snuggled up in bed and watched our favorite show and fell asleep. It was glorious.
The next morning we slept in and grabbed brunch at the Beach Comber at Crystal Cove. Not only is the venue incomparable and so beautiful, it was a gorgeous day and the food was out of this world! We ordered SO much yummy breakfast stuff like beignets and French toast, a frittata and coconut pancakes. We definitely like to eat. With full bellies, we booked 80 minute massages at the resort which were so relaxing but left us feeling disappointed. Over $400 for a basic rub down when both of us really craved a deep tissue work up. No one compares to Magic Hands Liz!!!!
After the massage we walked around the resort, talked about life, relaxed quietly in some hammocks, and flirted with each other. We laughed so much. It was just what we needed.
We got reservations for an early dinner at Capital Grille at South Coast Plaza. Neither of us had been there but we’d heard good things about it. Well, it was amazing. The service, the atmosphere, the FOOD! We were in heaven!!! That dinner was almost as much as our massages so...... clearly we act like we have more money to spend than we actually do. But it was wonderful and felt so good to have a total splurge day!!!
That night we attended Blue Man Group which we’d never seen before. I think Tanner was a little disappointed that we didn’t have seats closer to the front (I got the cheapest because we are not the high rollers we pretend to be) We had basically zero expectations for Blue Man Group and ended up really enjoying it! It was funny and quite entertaining!
We were so tired that night when we got back to the hotel so we snuggled down to a show and quickly fell asleep. When I woke up the next morning, I did yoga and listened to the Come Follow Me podcast that I love. I was feeling pretty guilty that we weren’t planning on going to church- mostly because I don’t get much out of church regularly and it would have been nice to attend church without the kids. But we ate out leftovers for breakfast, got ready and checked out. We were so rested, we felt like we kinda just wanted to go home. So we did! We were there for about an hour before the kids got home so we started some chicken and rice, unpacked, and enjoyed the peace a quiet before the chaos came running through the door.
Ella Tolley spent the night with the kids on Friday night and then Cami came on Saturday morning and spent the night that night. Then the Tolley’s picked the kids up for church and Cami left. But before she left she completely cleaned my house and it was spotless when we got home! She is just incredible! The kids had such a great time together- they played and swam and ate food... cousin time is the best time! I know Cami has a crazy busy schedule and that her life is anything but boring so for her to come and watch my kids is such a loving Christ-like thing to do for me. What a priceless gift of service!
We had the best time and I’m so grateful for the beautiful people who helped care for my children. We really needed that little weekend away and it was so wonderful to strengthen our bond and reconnect. Romantic weekends away are my love language!
